The Transition from Smart Buildings to Smart Cities
In the beginning. . .
. . . there was an era when humans were not as advanced as they are today, humans had become smart but lacked the ability to develop something smarter than them. As the 20th-century concluded, humans started progressing and developing intellectually, and it is easy to see how far we have come as a race. Humans have accomplished the aim of inventing smart devices and have also developed an ecosystem for most of them, but the point is, are we able to assist our globe through these smart devices? It is reported that 70 per cent of our resources are being utilized by urban cities and it is determined that 66 % of the world population will be living in cities by 2050, so we can conclude that the percentage of resource consumption will increase significantly.
Smarter buildings provide the essential foundation for creating smarter cities. As smarter cities likewise provide the support for creating a smarter planet.
Smart Buildings
Smart Buildings = Better Buildings: White House Nov. 4, 2011 Summary:
Today, the National Science and Technology Council (NSTC)—a cabinet-level interagency group of scientists and engineers—released a new report that recommends systematic consideration of submetering technologies that can yield up-to-date, finely grained snap shots of energy and water use in commercial and residential buildings to drive energy efficiency and capture the advantages of a modernized electric power grid.
Smart buildings – the future of building technology: A study on the future of building technology shows that requirements are undergoing lasting changes. Which changes are coming up and how Building Technologies is dealing with these changes is shown in this movie.
Smart Cities
What is the IBM vision of a Smart City? In the United States, buildings make up 70 percent of all energy use, and almost forty percent of all carbon dioxide emissions. Rethinking how buildings use energy is an essential issue of our time, and many have taken on the challenge of retrofitting energy hogs– to save money, to make cities more efficient, and to help the planet. Smart buildings can help people translate the mass amounts of data that our buildings generate, which in turn helps us more accurately understand (and mend) our energy use.
The Smart Cities Of Tomorrow Are Already Here : Recent projections show that by 2050, two-thirds of the global population will live in cities. Which makes it imperative that our future cities aren’t vast urban hellscapes but are instead smart urban centers with a dash of sci-fi: devices, roads, and lampposts all talking to each other – making life in cities safer and smoother. And this transformation…is already beginning
Sustainable Cities: The Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) is testing innovative strategies aimed at strengthening communities by boosting energy efficiency, reducing stormwater pollution and flooding, encouraging smart growth, cutting food waste, and providing better access to public transportation. We work on both citywide solutions and on smaller-scale neighborhood projects that can be scaled up.
Amazon’s City of the Future: What if Amazon moved its shipping centers downtown? Where drones fly into the buildings to pick up deliveries. This drone beehive is one of the ideas and patents that could be part of Amazon’s city of the future. From Amazon Go – the shop with no lines, and instant shipping and delivery, to hotels being serviced by Alexa and Amazon Echo, and Amazon Air. This mini documentary takes a look at how Amazon and Jeff Bezos is designing, and investing into technology and new services to bring a futuristic city to life.
Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR): Corporate social responsibility (CSR) is a self-regulating business model that helps a company be socially accountable—to itself, its stakeholders, and the public. By practicing corporate social responsibility, also called corporate citizenship, companies can be conscious of the kind of impact they are having on all aspects of society, including economic, social, and environmental.
To engage in CSR means that, in the ordinary course of business, a company is operating in ways that enhance society and the environment, instead of contributing negatively to them.
How Future Technology Affect Us On A Personal Level
Corning’s ‘A Day Made of Glass’ Finally Became a Reality: You may remember Corning’s ‘A Day Made of Glass’ video. Amassing over 25 million views on YouTube, the 5-minute clip’s recreation of a world in which every surface had a smart function seemed to terrify and excite the Internet in equal measure.
